TRANSPORT OF GOODS
The statement made by the Conupissioner of Transport (Mr. J. S. Hunter) to those interested in goods traffic services in Canterbury should clear the air. Mr. Hunter stated that there was no intention on the part of his department, at any rate in the meantime, to fix the rates to be charged for road-borne goods transport,. and that for a year at least those controlling such services might make whatever arrangements they considered were desirable. Such arrangements must, of course, comply with the regulations that have been issued, but the Commissioner indicated that their effects would be carefully watched, the assumption being that if experience indicates that certain amendments to the regulations are desirable they will be made. Mr. Hunter stated further that the policy of the department would be determined after full consultation with all engaged in transport services, including those conducted by the Railways Board. Everyone concerned will agree that such is sound administration, and the Commissioner’s assurance that the railways will receive only the same fair consideration as will be afforded, road services, should remove the suspicion that the regulations made or contemplated might be really intended to give the railways the monopoly of goods traffic. Mr; Hunter’s plea that the transport industry be regarded as one of too' much importance to be handled in a haphazard fashion is sure to meet with general approval, and his public acceptance of the truth that there is • scope for both rail and road services should make it possible for their co-ordination to be approached in a dispassionate manner. To give the Dominion the best return for the money expended upon transport and the most efficient service, possible i* the aim of the Transport Department. It is one that should appeal most of all to those whose enterprise and interests are most closely involved in those services.
