RESCUED FROM FLAMES
BLAZE IN AUCKLAND HOME FAMILY HAS NARROW ESCAPE. CHILDREN SNATCHED FROM BEDS. FIRE IMMEDIATELY FILLS ROOM. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, July 20. Four children were snatched from their beds by their father in a burning house at Swanson about 2 o clock this morning.The mother, Mrs. Sydney Hammond, awoke to hear the crackling of the fire. Sh® roused her husband, who opened the bedroom door. Flames were roaring down the passage and leapt at him. He closed 'the door, opened the window, pushed his wife out and scrambled out himself. He ran round the house to the children’s room. — * He smashed his way through the window with his arm and with blood streaming began handing the children out to the mother. Dense smoke filled the room and just aS the father pushed the eldest child through the window the. whole room burst into flames. ’ While the neighbours helped his family the father 'was taken to a doctor and had five stitches inserted in his arm. < The family lost everything except £75 insurance on the furniture.
