FRED HART ARRESTED
ART UNION WINNER CHARGED ALLEGED FAILURE TO MAINTAIN, EIGHT-YEAR-OLD warrant case. “LUCK AT LAST” GIVES LOCATION. F J A. Hart, winner of the first prize in the “Luck at Last” art union, appeared in the Hawera Court yesterday on an eight-year-old charge of failing to maintain his wife. He was remanded on substantial bail by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S M to apoear at Napier on July 26 and deposited the sum of £2OO in cash. Sergeant J. Henry in outlining the circumstances,’ said the waramt was issued in March, 1925, but Hart’s whereabouts were not ascertained. He had recently, drawn £2OOO in an art union and the publicity given this had led to the location of Hart and his arrest In asking for the remand the sergeant said he had no objection to bail of a fairly substantial amount. _ Asked by the magistrate if there were any children Hart said there was one in a home at Eltham. . The magistrate fixed bail in Harts own recognisance of £lOO and one surety of HOO. . J The sergeant said Hart had the cash in the bank and would have no difficulty in putting up his bail in cash. Mr. Salmon: If you put up the £2OO in cash that is equivalent to the recognisance and surety and will be sufficient. Hart was arrested at Hawera on Tuesday. The charge was: “On March 10, 1925, at Napier did fail to provide his wife, Mary Sarah Anne Hart, with adequate maintenance/’
