FREIGHT CONTRACT
PROSPECTS OF REDUCTION. N.Z. DAIRY PRODUCE, Carterton, July 14. Speaking at a conference of delegates to toe No. 5 Ward of the Dairy Produce Board at Carterton yesterday, Mr. Dynes Fulton, acting-chairman of the board, said that although toe negotiations for a new shipping contract for dairy produce were still in progress, there was sufficient information in hand to enable him to state that a satisfactory contract would be secured, with some hope of a further substantial reduction. While prices for our dairy products were much below the 1914 level, Mr. Fulton added, the freights for shipping were greatly hi excess of those ruling prior to 1914. For that reason the board felt thoroughly justified in asking that freights be brought down in conformity with prices. Mr. Fulton observed that substantial reductions had been effected. by contracts with shipping companies, and these he pointed out had been passed on to the producer. New Zealand producers, he added, had better concessions than the producers in Australia. In the negotiations for the new contract a demand had been made for a further reduction in freights. One of the main difficulties at the present time,, however, was the fact that, owing to toe cmallness of New Zealand s imports, ships had to come out in ballast to take the produce Home.
