HOPES OF GOLD

PEGGING AT CROMWELL, EXTENSIVE LIST OF CLAIMS. Dunedin, July 14. Although no special activity is apparent in mining circles at Cromwell, a considerable amount of pegging still goes on, the new fields extending from Lindis Pass on one side to Nevis on the other. An indication of the amount of pegging carried out can be gathered from the public file at the local courthouse. For the period from July 5 to July 13, a total of 122 applications for mining areas was lodged for areas totalling just on 6000 acres. About 1020 acres have been marked out at Nevis, 900 on Lowburn Terraces, 200 acres at Quartz Reef Point, 295 acres at Bendigo, 119 at Luggate, 1180 at Cardrona Valley, 932 acres on Cromwell Flat, and 400 acres at various other points. Many areas have been marked within the residential area of the town. , * The work set down for the August sitting of the Warden’s Court at Cromwell must constitute a record for a Warden's Court in the Dominion, as 276 applications are on the list for Cromwell, and, with those at subsidiary Courts, the total reaches 385. In the absence of grants, there is still little activity in tire way of development work.
