BOY’S PREDICAMENT

ON LEDGE ABOVE TUNNEL. CROWD VIEWS RESCUE. Wellington, July 12. Consdierable difficulty was experienced by a policeman and several passers-by at mid-day yesterday in rescuing a . small boy who had slipped down a steep bank on to the parapet of the Mount Victoria traffic tunnel at Hataitai. The work of rescuing the boy from his dangerous position was watched by a fairly large crowd.. Shortly before mid-day complaints were made to the police that two small boys had been throwing stones at motorcars as they were driven through the Hataitai portal of the tunnel. When a constable arrived on the scene he found that one of the boys had slipped* down the concrete face of the cutting arid had been caught on the parapet. No ladders were available to rescue him from his precarious position, ana, while the constable was searching for a rope, a young man who had come through the tunnel in a, cart loaded with kindling wood removed his boots and with some difficulty climbed along the side face of the cuting, eventually reaching the boy. He remained with him until a rope was obtained by the P°*^ e and one end lowered to the parapet, ine boy was then tied to the rope and hauled to safety, his rescuer being then a*so hauled up. . , For all concerned the situation >hus ended happily. The little boy returned to his home cheerfully, with only a small scratch on one hand, and the constable who had been sent to him was too relieved at the safe to impress the boy conclusively with the majesty of the law.- Fittingly too, the rescuer, the young man with the wood cart, received tangibleappreciaho of the difficulty of his risky task. A woman who had watched the rescue immediately gave an order for some o wood. -
