MELBOURNE CENTENARY
COMING CELEBRATION. ECONOMY THE WATCHWORD. “What a lively Centenary celebration Victoria might have enjoyed if the jubilee period’ had come before the world was plunged into sackcloth and ashes for its economic sins during and after the war!” ’ the Melbourne Age remarks. “If money were as plentiful'’ as it was even four or five years ago, what a time the executive would now be having to selecting great schemes for celebrating the Centenary, and, incidentally, for attracting shiploads of visitors from all parts of the world to witness the rejoicings. “As things are economy is the watchword that governs ' all authorities that have the control of money. The architects have’ suggested the erection of a permanent ’ Centenary/memorial;. someone has proposed that a Centenary bridge should be erected over the Yarra to facilitate the heavy flow of city traffic; a new Spencer Street station is urged; and there is a host of other proposals quite apart from the Centenary parks and the boulevards, which , would take hundreds of thousands of pounds to carry out. “But Victoria, in, common with the rest of the world, is in the financial sense, bottled up.- The Premier has told the architects that the Governor’s speech would indicate the Government’s policy for helping the building industry. If any of the architects have visions of an elaborate programme being enunciated they would be wise to pretax* fox a disappointment.”
