HIGH DUTIES IN AUSTRALIA

Australia maintained duties ranging from 100 to 200 per cent, on British hosiery and knitted wear, Mr. E. H. Pickering declared in the House of Commons to-day. He asked what the difference was in the basic wages in the two countries. Mr. J. H. Thomas, Secretary foy hte Dominions, said the duties were on a high level, but he understood they were now being considered by the Commonwealth Tariff Board. He was aware that British employers claimed that the basic rates here were as high as any in the world. He also promised Mr. Pickering to take action if it could be usefully done in relation to 92J per cent, duty charges on British elastic fabric.
