DUELS IN GERMANY

REGULATIONS FOR SOLDIERS. Duelling among students in Germany, hitherto nominally forbidden under the Monarchy and the post-war Socialist regime in Germany, has been legalised by one of the new laws passed by the German Cabinet and published on May 23. The text of the new law reads:—• “Provided adequate precautions are taken to avoid risk of life, duelling from now onwards will not be punishable, nor will the challenge nor the acceptance of a challenge. The law referring to duelling by persons of 'military rank has been revised as follows:— - . “Whoever challenges a superior oincer to a duel is punishable by imprisonment for not less than one year where the duel has not actually taken place. If the duel, however, has been I fought, the imprisonment shall not be I less than three years. Officers will, at the same time, be dismissed from the army. A superior officer who accepts such challenge, or fights a duel, will be similarly punished.” Another of the new laws provides than any foreigner sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, or more, may be expelled from the Reich as a person considered by the authorities to be “a danger to others.” A third regulation aims at preventing enterprising business people from makipg monev out of the patriotic sentiments of the people. For example, Frankfort Sausages (“Hot Dogs’ ) can no longer be offered for sale in the State as swastika, nor can they be made up in this form. Students are forbidden to dress themselves in such symbols, nor may bar or dance partners dress themselves as officers of “Frederick the Great.” These laws apply automatically in every part of Germany.
