LUNA LUX IN GOOD FORM BRAMBLETON RECOMMISSIONED. KILTOWYN GALLOPS WELL. ...... .. . , . . /
(By.
“Hurry On.”)
It is reported.'that the president, Mr. O. S. Watkins, will not be well enough to preside over .the Racing Conference next week and that the vice-president, Mr. O. Nicholson, Auckland, will, be in the chair. ■ .... Trip DoubtfuL • Auckland reports state that Speedmint injured one of her hocks recently arid her trip to Trentham is regarded as doubtful. However, the injury is not. serious and the mare has been working so well that if the .injured limb makes good progress she. may be sent down, just in time for the meeting. , Riders in the Steeples. The following > riders have been en-: gaged for the Wellington Steeplechase;— BiUy Boy 12.0, D. J. Burgess. CaUamart 11.10, C. Thompson. Make Up 11.3, W. Rennie. Luna Lux 10.2, A. MacDonald. Copey 9.9, D. O’Connor. High Pitch 9.4, H. Dulieu. Omeo 9.4, A. Jenkins. Valves 9.0, H. Turner. Best of the Morning. Kiltowyn, who went slightly amiss on the eve of the Great Northern meeting, is again galloping in: great style at EllersUe. He was responsible for easily the best gallop on that track'on Thursday morning, when he recorded 50 3-5 s for half a mile, and did it well. From the tasks being' aUotted him it' would appear that he may be racecj- at .the special meeting at Ellerslie on July 22. Eldora in Work Again.
J. L. Gray has recommissioned Eldora. It is reported that she has developed into a fine type,of .thoroughbred, and big. hopes are. held out regarding her prospects next season. She fell .from ■ grace during the autumn but looks like mak-. ing amends during the coming spring.
Luna Lux is Well, The favourite for the. big steeples at Trentham on Tuesday,' Luna Lux, has been getting through strong work at Hastings in 'good style.* He is, to Jto sent by train to-day,., so it is not likely that, this fine, fencer will be asked to tackle; the Trentham country before the actual’ race. Should Make Good.
A newcojner to the tracks at Ellerslie, is a three-year-old by Callagan from the; grey mare Rehutai, who was trained by; J. Fryer at Hawera-some years ago. She 1 did some phenomenal, trials at times but did not act up to them with the colours up. This three-year-old is reported to possess plenty of size and his connections intend to make a jumper of him. Being by the sire of CaUamart from a mare byLucullus, the sire of, Glendowie and others, he should make good over the obstacles. Did Not Impress.
Joie de Vai, who is to make her debut as a hurdler at Trentham on Tuesday, did not give a very impressive display over three fences in company with Pahu the other morning. She was mclined to swerve at the hurdles and jumped very high. Pahu, an experienced fencer, jumped in good style.
Two in a Day. . Dracula, who won two eveiits at Oamaru in easy fashion, is a three-year-old by Arrowsmith and Rosy Red, an All Red mare coming from the Fairy Rose family, which, has produced some smart gallopers. Dracula has had a reputation for speed on the tracks but until Saturday last he had not lined up to it. How that he has started he may go on with it, and more may be heard of him during the next few months. Showed Promise.
Brambletom has recommenced work at Hastings. He is reported to be looking well but is likely to require a lot of work to get him ready for the spring meetings. This son of The Ace gave every indication of developing into a really good horse last autumn, nnd his progress will be watched with interest. Being a big, raking horse’ arid a long strider he is likely to show his nest on big courses. Many Pay Forfeit.
The English St. Leger will" not be run until September 13, but the owners of horses not withdrawn by March 31 were liable for £5O each. Despite the heaviness of the forfeit, 77 remained in after the date mentioned. The added money is £4ooo’ and the sweepstakes for starters is £lOO. A liability of £5O five months and a half before a race is run is certainly a solid levy, and it is one that' only the richest of owners would care often to have to meet. Silver Scorn’s Weights. -
The Randwick owner-trainer F. T. Cush is to be congratulated oh the early withdrawal of the former New Zealand champion three-year-old Silver Scorn from the Epsom Handicap and the Metropolitan when it was not intended that she should fulfil the engagements, for she would undoubtedly have received some attention from pie-post backers, says a Sydney paper. Cush said that he did not have any complaint of the imposts awarded Silver Scom-he did not think the handicapper could have treated her any better—but as she was only a small filly there would be ample opportunity for her later in her career to contest these races. Silver Som would be reserved for the weight-for-age- races in Sydney, and if she came up to requirements consideration would then pe given to her Victorian handicap engagements. If , Silver Scorn could not win at weight-for-age at this stage of her career it would be useless asking her to carry so much over the scale in the handicaps, more especially against such stout opposition. Failure in weight-for-age races would also be a guide as to future platings. “Her New Zealand record points to her being a champion," added Cush, “and as you are -fortunate to get one champion, it fems to me to be asking her too much to carry such weighs now, more especially as she had a strenuous time in the Dominion and has been here only about nine weeks.
