STRATFORD EN FETE POULTRY SECTION OPENED “OF DOMINION STANDARD” CROWDS THRONG HALLS With the opening of the poultry section, the section that was the real genesis of the show when ft was inaugurated in 1924, the Stratford winter show entered its full stride yesterday. The day at Stratford yesterday dawned perfectly and crowds thronged the three large halls all day and evening. The poultry was housed in the long hall to the left of the show buildings and there were very full benches for what is the main section of the exhibition. The judges were occupied all morning deciding a long list of classes in many sections and awarding a multitude of special prizes, hi the afternoon and evening the hall was thrown open to the show visitors, and long rows of roosters and ®hens were able to crow and cackle to their hearts’ content to an admiring audience. The pigeon, rabbit and canary classes also were not assembled until yesterday morning. Completion in the judging of the home industries section was reached yesterday morning and members of the Factory Managers’ Association held a grading competition. > The poultry display, which has always been the strongest side of the show, is fully up to the standard of previous years. One competent judge from Manawatu gave it as his opinion that the Stratford exhibition was as good as any to be seen in the Dominion. The attendance on opening day, Wednesday, which is never expected to be as large as on succeeding days, was very good and resulted in the takings being about £1 more than on the similar day last year. Indications showed they had made an advance in every respect, said Mr. A. J. Davey, president of the association. They had had to refuse applications for 120 feet of floor space and ask other exhibitors to take slightly smaller space, a thing that had never happened before. The root section was too big to be contained entirely inside and a shed and had to be built on Miranda Street to house the .overflow. In addition there was the largest and. most varied display of milking machines he had seen at any Taranaki show, which pointed to prospects of increased trade. All branches of the show were, in fact, ahead of anything they had had before, said Mr. Davey, and with the fine weather that had arrived and the crowd that already was present it was plain to see the show, was “driving yet another nail in the coffin of old man slump.” The show was packed last night. Receipts show about a 7 per cent, increase on last year’s figures over the first two days.
