FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE
PROBATION FOR FIRST OFFENDER. ARTICLES SOLD BY HAWERA FIRM. “I do not like the second attempt,” said Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at Hawera yesterday, in admitting John William Simmons to a year’s probation on a false pretences charge. “You are fortunate that Sergeant Henry has recommended probation.” The amount involved, Sergeant Henry explained, was £1 15s. 31. Simmons went into Harrops, Ltd., Hawera, and ordered two pairs of trousers, a football jersey and a working shirt. He said they were to be charged to A. J. Davies, Whakamara, who had given him authority to do this. The goods were supplied. Next day Simmons came back and said Miss Lysaght had authorised him to procure other goods. The shop assistant telephoned Miss Lysaght, who said she had given no such authority. Davies was then telephoned and said he had given no order. As Simmons was a first offender and of good character the sergeant recommended probation. Simmons, who pleaded guilty, had nothing to say. He was ordered to make restitution.

HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. I “MARRY ME,” RENATE MULLER. Renate Muller, well remembered as “Sunshine Susie,” is once again delighting audiences by her infectious gaiety in “Marry Me,” which will be shown at the Hawera Opera House to-day at 2 p.m., to-night and finally to-morrow. She takes the part of Ann Linden, the recordist in a gramophone factory. She is in love with Robert Hart, the eldest of a trio of happy-go-lucky brothers who muddle through life in a hopelessly untidy bachelors’ flat. lan Hunter, Maurice Evans and Charles Hawtrey junr. invest. these roles with a gay, youthful spirit. Robert Hart seems to be blind to the charms of his co-worker at the gramophone studio, and Ann determines to,follow the advice of her friendly manager and use tactics to win him. Furthering her plan, the matrimonial bureau kept by Herr Bernstein brings her into touch with Aloysius Novak, a beetlebrowed Hungarian farmer, who is played in typically ludicrous fashion by George Robey. Ann’s tactics finally result as successfully as she wished. Seats should be reserved at Miss Blake’s.
