WELLINGTON LANDMARK

WOODEN BUILDING DOOMED. ANDERSON’S CHINA SHOP. Two of the old wooden buildings.in Willis Street, Wellington, are about to disappear. One is the premises of Messrs. L. Dwan and Sons, next to the Grand Hotel, the second is what old Wellington residents knew as Anderson’s glass and china shop for 40 years. The latter property was recently acquired by J. R. McKenzie, Limited, from Mr. H. D. Bennett, who secured the premises from the late Mr. Anderson. This building, erected by the late Mr. Edward Anderson, was some 50 years ago considered one of the finest shops in Wellington. At one time Mr. Edward Anderson had the finest stock of crystal in New Zealand, and his taste in china was impeccable. , A great deal of the timber in the old building is still perfectly sound, the only instances of decay being where water has been allowed to lie. Much of the Matai flooring-is as sound as the day it was laid down and infinitely harder. A new building is to be erected on the site.
