HAWERA ITEMS
Mr. and Mrs. H. Raine left on Thursday for Kawhia, where Mr. Raine has been appointed manager of the Bank of New Zealand. Mrs. Mair, who has been spending the past few weeks with her daughter, Mrs. T. H. McWilliams, returned to Hunterville this week. Miss Laishley, who has been Miss McLean's guest for the past 10 days, has returned to Wellington. Miss S. Ross, Wanganui, is staying with Miss Mary Bright. Miss M. Washer has been the guest of Mrs. Stanley Davidson, Patea, for the past few days. Mrs. Struthers, Persia, who is on an extended holiday in New Zealand, was the guest of Mr. ana Irs. Barclay, Okaiawa, during the week. Mrs. H. R. Kemp was hostess at tea on Tuesday, when Mesdames F. Livingstone, Mair (Hunterville), T. H. McWilliams, Charles Bayley, C. J. Hawken (Mokoia), Woodward "nd G. J. Bayley, and Miss Kidd, were among those entertained. Mrs. Kemp wore a dark red afternoon gown and Miss Kemp, who assisted her mother, wore a geranium red suit. Mrs. W1 A. O’Callaghan (president) received the guests at the club on Monday night, when Mrs. Struthers, Persia, was the guest of honour. During the evening vocal items were given by Mrs. N. Crump (Wellington), Mrs. R. S. Allwright and Miss E. Murdocn, Mesdames Crump and Allwright also contributing a duet. On Thursday afternoon Mrs. R. F. Pease entertained at bridge in her home, Manawapou Road, to assist in raising funds for St. Mary’s Guild. The hostess to receive the guests was attired in a gown of navy blue crepe de chine. The reception and bridge rooms were attractively decorated with bowls and vases of brown chrysanthemums and yellow kniphofia. Among the players were Mesdames Norman, ,N. Lewes, E. R. Dale, W. Jobson, Evans, A. Wills, C. H. Washer, Buckeridge, R. Campbell, Smith, H. Whitby James, F. Evans, F. W. Sutton, W. J. Bright, Payne, R. R. Henderson, J. Hobbs and Misses E. Caplen, J. McDonald, R. Pease and G. White. > Mesdames G. Wyatt, J. Dash, G. W. Powdrall, Woodward, H. R. Kemp, H. D. Cameron, L. A. Ablett and H. Swinbum, and Misses Kidd (Richmond) and G. Goodson, were entertained at tea by Mrs. T. F. McKenzie on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. D. G. Smart was hostess at tea on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Mesdames Moorhouse, J. Houston, C. Bayley, A. Hunter, A. Coleman, W. O. Williams and W. J. Bright, and Misses B. Watty (Auckland), Hay-Mackenzie, Smart, K. Coleman, M. Bright, Rawson, E. Gordon (Masterton) and J. Hunter, were among the guests. The hostess wore an afternoon suit in a golden brown tint. Miss Sheila Lovell, who has been on six months’ holiday overseas, returned home this week, travelling from London to Sydney by the liner Otranto and arriving at Wellington by the Makura at the beginning of the week. Mrs. W. Syme, wearing a black satin and lace frock, received a number of guests on Tuesday afternoon and entertained them at tea. Mesdames R. S. Allwright, N. Crump (Wellington), L. B. Lewis, W. G. Strange, C. O. Pratt, A. F. Beck, N. F. Stead and A: E. Stevens were among those present. NORMANBY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Normanby Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. T. J. Allan presiding over an attendance of seventy members and friends. The president extended a special welcome to Mrs. Rakana, president of the newly-formed Maori Women’s Institute, and the several other visitors present. Mrs. E. T. Peach. was appointed to represent the institute at the forthcoming Dominion conference at Christchurch. Several other members will attend as visitors. The president was nominated as a candidate for the office of group convener for South Taranaki. The following new members were enrolled: Mesdames Penfold, Brisco, Grantham, Robb and Martis, Misses Hopcroft and Slinger. The competition, which was for the best novelty costing not more than 2s 6d, was won by Miss Pearle Gane, with Mrs. Boothby second and Mrs. Galloway third. The articles displayed were all of high standard and the judges, Mesdames Bloor and Rakana, had considerable difficulty in awarding the prizes. Songs by Misses A. White and W. Mills were .enjoyed and a short programme of community singing and the roll call for “the task I dislike most” caused merriment. A feature was the large and varied display of articles of handcrafts and home manufactures exhibited by the members. The articles are all for exhibition on Normanby’s stall at the Ottawa show. Mr. L. O. Hooker attended the meeting for the purpose of making final arrangements for the exhibition. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames F. Pidgeon, H. I. Crocker and E. Hurliman. TURUTURU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Turuturu Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. Mrs. W. H. James presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Larcom, president of the Whareroa institute, was the guest of the afternoon. Mrs. Evans and Mrs. D. McNeil were hostesses. Articles for the Turuturu institute stall at the winter show were displayed. Considering the short time the institute has been in existence the result was most satisfactory. The competition—collection of articles for the stall—was judged by Mrs. Larcom, who placed the three best in the following order:—Mrs. Beauchamp 1, Mrs. A. Corrigan 2, Mrs. Meharry 3. A “widest smile” competition -was won by Miss Exley. WHAREROA WOMAN’S INSTITUTE.. At the residence of Mrs. Larcom on Tuesday the Whareroa Women’s Institute held its first meeting. There was a good attendance. The president, Mrs. Larcom, was in the chair. Five new members were enrolled. After business, was discussed the afternoon was spent in a guessing competition, which was won by Miss I. Nicholas, and 2nd. in a charade, Mrs. Laing being the only one to answer correctly. Mrs. T. J. Allen of the Normanby Institute was present and gave valuable assistance. At the close of proceedings afternoon tea was served, Mrs. Larcom acting as hostess. MATAPU GIFT EVENING. A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sharp, Matapu, when friends of Miss Phyllis Henry met and tendered her a gift evening prior to her marriage. Flag five hundred was played during the evening, the winning table being that of Mrs. Calder, Miss Lunam, Mr. Luxton and Mr. York. After supper, Mr. Treweek on behalf of those present wished Miss Henry and Mr. J. Preece happiness and good fortune and asked them to accept gifts from their friends. Mr. Preece thanked Mr. and Mrs. Sharp and those present for their good wishes and gifts.
