NIUE ISLAND SCHOOLS
DISPLAY AT WINTER SHOW. PRODUCTS OF NATIVE INDUSTRY. With the object of stimulating public interest in the island dependencies of New Zealand and to create a. market for the products of native industry and handcrafts the South Taranaki Winter Show this year will make a prominent feature of a valuable collection of Niue Island school exhibits. : A large consignment is being unpacked and the work of classifying the articles and displaying them to best advantage is proceeding. Woven baskets in a wide range of sizes and shapes for all sorts of purposes predominate. There are clothes baskets, waste paper baskets and baskets for babies’ outfits. Woven table mats and trays and cake or fruit stands and baskets are also shown in variety together with native dresses, native weapons and polished walking sticks in an attractive hardwood. Of special interest to boys is a fine collection of decorated model boats, each equipped with outrigger, while the collector of curios will be interested in some highly polished coconut bowls and an exhibit of shells and bead necklaces, AU the exhibits with minor exceptions, are being sold at very reasonable prices during show week, but of course, purchases must remain on view until after the show has concluded.
Examples of school work, writing and composition, will have an appropriate place in the display. Pottery is one of the subjects of art taken by students in Canadian schools and from Ottawa comes a fine collection of specimen pieces of useful and decorative pottery for exhibition at the show. As each case is being unpacked some new work is revealed and the display benches devoted to this work already bear a well-laden appearance.
