DOMINION’S BIRTHDAY LIST MR. J. S. BARTON BECOMES C.M.G. KNIGHTHOOD FOR COLONEL ALLEN DR. ACLAND KNIGHT BACHELOR. By 'telegraph— Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, announced to-day that the King had been pleased on the occasion of his Majesty’s birthday to confer the following honours:— K.8.E.: Colonel Stephen Shepherd Allen, Morrinsville, formerly administrator of Western Samoa. Knight Bachelor: Dr. Hugh Thomas Dyke Acland, Christchurch. C.M.G.: John Saxon Barton, stipendiary magistrate, Napier; Thomas Lindsay Buick, Wellington. • . 0.8. E.: Makea Nui Tinirau Ariki, of Cook Islands; 1.5.0. Theophilus Benjamin Strong, late director of education. The following is a copy of a cable despatched by the Governor-General to the King on the occasion of his Majestys birthday: “I beg on the occasion of your Majesty’s birthday to tender on behalf of your Majesty’s Government and the people of New Zealand loyal and affectionate greetings and good wishes and to assure you of-their steadfast devotion to your Majesty’s Throne and person and their earnest hope for your continuea health and happiness.”
Mr. J. S. Barton has long been well and favourably known in Taranaki as a magistrate, a sportsman and a help in charitable causes. When stationed at Wanganui he regularly presided over the Court at Hawara, Patea and Waverley, and occasionally at New Plymouth and elsewhere in Taranaki. After presiding over several commissions Mr. Barton was appointed chairman of the commission of two which controlled the destinies of the Borough of Napier since the earthquake of February, 1931, until recently, when Napier elected a borough council.
