DAIRY BOARD ELECTIONS. ______ DAIRY BOARD ELECTION TO THE ELECTORS OF WARD 4. Gentlemen,— Having been a dairy farmer for over 25 years and in an. overseas import business in Leith, the port of Edinburgh,. for more than eight years, I claim to have a knowledge of the dairy industry which places me in a position to be of useful service as a member of the . New Zealand Dairy Board. I am convinced that it is vitaljy necessary to-day to clear our only market of accumulated stocks of produce by a better system of distribution at Home so that every city, town and village in England will be catered for. For 140 years the Danes . ’ have been paying particular attention to this matter, and have an almost perfect system of distribution. I am a strong advocate of a reduction in the salaries of officers, of the Dairy Board, and I consider several thousands ■of pounds sterling can be saved in this way. Then, again, £25,000 is spent on advertising with little result. . ■ I consider that every endeavour should be made to open new markets in Java, India, West Indies, China and Japan, and I hold that the New Zealand Government should not have interfered with exchange. The Dairy Board has failed dismally since the control fiasco and seems to have lost a grip of affairs and has shown little or no evidence of a constructive policy. The Board would be well advised to open dairies in our own towns and sell finest milk, cream, butter and . cheese at a reasonable price. This would increase consumption and obviate the necessity of a quoth. There is little doubt that a dumping duty on New Zealand butter would ruin the industry. Britain has a great amount of capital invested in New Zealand and must help us to help ourselves. I confidently solicit the support of producers, and have no hesitation in giving my assurance that, if elected, it will be my earnest endeavour to do my utmost to consult the best interests of the dairy farmers of New Zealand. Yours for Honesty of Purpose, J. F. RITCHIE. Inglewood, June 2, ”1933. DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD ELECTION MR. H. E. GRAHAM WILL ADDRESS ELECTORS AS HEREUNDER: CARDIFF HALL, MONDAY, June 5, at 8 p.m. STRATFORD, PARISH HALL, TUESDAY, June 6, at 1.30 p.m. NGAERE HALL, TUESDAY, June 6, at 8 p.m. INGLEWOOD, TOWN HALL, WEDNESDAY, June. 7, at 1.30 p.m. TARIKI HALL, WEDNESDAY, June 7, at 8 p.m. FURTHER MEETING ANNOUNCEMENTS TO FOLLOW.

N.Z. DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD ELECTION TO THE ELECTORS: TN view of the impossibility of interviewing all producers on the above question, -owing to the limited time available, and in view of the fact that it is difficult to arrange for producers to attend meetings called, I earnestly solicit your support of my candidature. I stand behind my promise, given to the Dairy Companies who have .supported my nomination, of SERVICE to the INDUSTRY, EFFICIENCY and El-ONOMY. It is absolutely necessary that the Industry should have a controlling body to govern its affairs, and I believe the Dairy Produce Board should constitute that head. ’ - - . I believe the Produce Board has failed in its duties, in that it has not kept in the closest touch with the Industry, and that the results of investigations, which it has been in the power of the Board to make, have not been openly and definitely placed before the Dairy Companies. SERVICE! If returned, I propose, by personal contact with your Boards of . Dire’ctors, to bring all matters directly before you, and thereby carry out ’ ’ ’ a function of the Board, which has been lacking in the past. EFFICIENCY! The various duties of the Board must be carried out in an efficient manner, and it is therefore necessary that the Board must oe efficient, and its efficiency can only be proved by its SERVICE to the Industry. ECONOMY! It is necessary that the expenditure of the Board should be thoroughly investigated, and it is questionable whether the funds of the Board have been, carefully administered. It is questionable if the extensive advertising expenditure has been justified, particularly in view of the fact that over an extensive period, our produce has been condemned by meetings of producers, reports of which condemnation have appeared continually in the New Zealand Press. An article of good quality, marketed, is the best possible advertisement that can be secured. SALAKIES, MEMBERS’ FEES and EXPENSES require immediate attention, and must be brought into line with existing conditions. MARKETING! There is no producer in the Dominion, who can be satisfied with the present marketing conditions, and it is obvious that our ' require the Board’s assistance, in’ improving the conditions under which our produce is sold. The Board can assist both Tooley Street, and the Producer by a full investigation into the activities of all agents, and it is the Boards duty to make that investigation, and report to the Dairy Companies the result of its findings. Bad marketing methods have cost the Industry many thousands of pounds during the past season, according to proof which I hold, and I am most desirous that this question should once and for all be fully investigated. To the many Producers whom I shall not have the opportunity -of seeing during this election, whether they be producers of Butter or Cheese, I give this assurance that if appointed to the Board I will fully investigate the affairs of the Industry and, by personal contact with your individual Companies, will keep you fully advised of all questions vital to your welfare. FOR SERVICE; EFFICIENCY AND ECONOMY VOTE GRAHAM AND I WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. Yours obediently, H. GRAHAM. MIDHIRST, May 31, 1933. ' ’
