BRITISH EMPIRE PROBLEM INDIA NEEDS URGENT ACTION NON-POLITICAL WORK URGED 1 - RAISING COMMODITY PRICES British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, May 27. The problem of Japanese competition was one new in its present magnitude in the experience of India and the British Empire, said Sir Samuel Hoare, Secretary for India, at the annual Bombay dinner in London. Sir Samuel did not blame the Japanese competitors for attempting to capture the Indian markets but it was necessary to consider how best to deal with competition founded on very cheap labour, very efficient machinery and highly depreciated exchange. On this urgent problem action must be taken if Indian trade was not to receive irrevocable injury. There was a,so the problem of raising commodity prices. Both problems could be approached far more effectively by British and Indian business men working together free from the interference of politics.
