FARMERS’ EUCHRE EVENINGThe- miserable weather only slightly affected the attendance at the Mangatoki progressive euchre tournament under the auspices of the Farmers’ Union on Friday evening. About 70 players comfortably filled the space available. Play wag keen and interesting. Mrs. Patten with 9} points of a maximum 13 Won the first prize for the ladies. Mrs. A. Bootten won the re-play with Miss Fischback. (9 points each), they winning second and third prizes respectively. Mrs. J. Johnson secured a consolation prize. Messrs.- C. Reed and J. McGuinness (10 points each) won the men’s first and second prizes after the re-play. Mr. C. MacGlone filled third place with 9 points. Mr. Stewart Parker won the consolation trophy. ... ■ After supper there was dancing till midnight with music played by Mesdames W. Bennie, Leslie and J. H. Anderson, Miss D.. Gatenby and Mr. Eliason. Mr. S. McGuinness and L. Schicker were masters of ceremonies. Mr. C. Reed donated his prize (hedge clippers) to the local school committee, fdr which .he was thanked and warmly applauded. General and Personal, Mrs. R. D. Douglass and Miss M- Pease left for Wellington by motor this weekend for a shbrt holiday. Mrs. A. C. Pease will return with thejn to Mangatoki. It is anticipated the dairy company will receive on alternate days after Wednesday. Returns are keeping up fairly well despite the colder weather. Tfie local hockey team with the second match against Eltham still to play has. a five-point lead over the second placed team in the section competition. It is not thought a third round will be played in view of the three sections’ play-off.
