WOMEN’S DIVISION AFFAIRS

NEW PLYMOUTH BRANCH. The New Plymouth branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union met on Friday, when there was a good attendance presided over by Mrs. McPhillips. Pleasure was expressed at the number of new members present. Preparation for the forthcoming show at Hawera were discussed. The branches in North Taranaki will have their first Women’s Division court at -the show. This will be a new venture for New Plymouth and the members hope to make it a special feature of the show. The resourcefulness of the women on the land during, times of stress will be exemplified. in their display of thrift articles, and in the many ways in which wool can be used. Mrs. Blackley offered to make a baby’s outfit for exhibition, and the members of the division will have a display of articles costing not more than Is 6d.

A. competition to augment the funds of the branch is to be held, and it was decided that the prize be a pair of blankets made from New Zealand wool. The members of the sewing committee had made a splendid collection of garments for the needy, and a large parcel will be forwarded by the president to the Relief Council.

It was reported that a splendid response was made to the appeal for provisions for the mart day on May 5. The use of the shop was given gratuitously and the effort resulted in over £l4 to assist the distressed. The cushion No. 23 was won by Miss Sadler, Westown, and the dinner went to Mrs. Hamilton, Waiwaka Terrace (No. 84). Mrs. Doherty, the oldest lady present and one who for many years took an active interest in doings political and educational, addressed those present and urged them to keep on the good work.
