OPUNAKE FEDERAL BAND

ANNUAL MEETING BUSINESS. APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. . The annual meeting of the Opunake Federal Band was held on Friday- even,'ing. Mr. F. Julian presided over a good attendance. ’ ' , .' . The treasurer (Mr. G. Fisher) presented the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £8 19s 10d. The bal,‘ance of assets over liabilities was £2lO. The committee’s report submitted by the secretary (Mr. C. Humphries) stated that the year although not a successful one financially had been encouraging'in regard to the working of the band. Practices had been well maintained. The band attended the Eltham contest on March 23, and although not successful put up a good performance, the remarks of the adjudicator being very encouraging. The only effort to raise funds during the year was a concert in December which was a brilliant success, mainly due to the .organising ability of Mr. Henderson. It was to be regretted that such sporting bodies as the Opunake Racing Club and the Rahoiu Athletic Club had seen fit to dispense with the services of the band- this year. The committee as well as the bandsmen hoped that this form of economy would not continue. It was to.be hoped that in the ensuing year the management committee would go into the question of raising funds to wipe off the present liability. The uniforms were also becoming dilapidated. The late conductor, Mr. R. Henderson, tendered his resignation through his leaving the district. The band had suffered a serious lost. It was mainly due to Mr. Henderson’s untiring efforts that the band was able to attend, the contest, and his position as conductor would be extremely hard to fill. The committee placed on record its regret at the death of one of the vice-presidents, Mr. A. E. McKeown. The committee thanked all who assisted the band.

In moving the. adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman paid a tribute to-the active officials It was stated that no correspondence had been received regarding a contributory payment from the contest executive towards the band’s travelling expenses to the contest.
