EDUCATION BOARD’S VISIT. The members of the Mangatoki school committee met the visiting Education Board members and staff officials at the school on Thursday morning. The visitors were Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P. (chairman), H. Jempsey, J. A. Valentine, W. H. Jones, W. B. Glasgow, J. C. Barclay, H. W. Insull (secretary) and C. H. Moore (architect). After looking around the grounds and inspecting contemplated alterations to the outbuildings the visitors were introduced to the scholars and staff by the board chairman. Messrs. Valentine and Dempsey addressed the children. On behalf of the school committee Mr. B. H. Parker extended a welcome to the board members and staff. He stated such visits, bringing the board and staff into personal contact, did much to encourage the school staff and the committee, besides stimulating interest in the welfare of the children. Mr Smith expressed thanks for the welcome. He and the other visitors were pleased to see the committeemen were faithfully carrying out their duties, and complimented them on the good work [they were doing. The visit was intend-
ed to make them better with the men they had communication with. ana to enable the board to learn at first-hand the requirements of the schools. Morning tea was provided by the committee, assisted by Mrs. A. E. Mahon, Miss Bowden and two scholars. Mr. J. C. Barclay extended thanks on behaL of the visitors. . After the visitors had left Kapqnga the committee held an informal meeting and inspection of the school area, deciding on an extensive programme of work relying on assistance under the No. -5a unemployment scheme. Men’s Hockey Match. The Mangatoki Men’s Hockey . Club maintained its unbeaten record in the junior division by defeating Otakeho on the Mangatoki ground on Thursday by three goals to nil. The scores were all secured in the first spell, when play was 'of a fast and interesting nature.. Two goals were scored in as many minutes. After the change-over play became more or less scraggy and of the hit-and-run type. No doubt the heavy ground had its effect on the players. Otakeho ed a strenuous game but was outmatched by the superior combination of the Mangatoki team. On two occasions Otakeho went very close to scoring but was kept mainly defending. Goals were scored by Walker, Wolfe and Hosking. Messrs. Davidson and Morgan refereed.
