MATIERE NOTES

FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. At a meeting of the local branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held in the Matiere hall on Thursday, May 18, Mr. W. Sanderson presided over an enthusiastic meeting. Mr. T. F. Jolly, organiser, gave a very interesting address calling for unity amongst farmers, which in his. opinion was'more essential to-day than at any time in the country’s history.'- He was ably supported by Messrs. W. Sanderson, A. L. Ross, Geo. Jebb, R. Wemberg and others present. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:—(l) That this meeting of Matiere settlers considers it imperative that the Government introduce the de-rating of rural lands, as under the present conditions we will be unable to pay rates in the future. (2) That this meeting views with alarm any means of restricting our output of butter in the way of a quota. (3) That this meeting urgently requests the Government to set up a commission, presided over by Supreme Court judges, to hold an inquiry into the present currency system with a view to finding a way out of our present financial difficulties. A vote of thanks to Mr. Jolly for his address was passed unanimously. Farewell at Otangiwai On Friday last, about 100 people of Otangiwai gathered at the hall, when in conjunction with the weekly euchre party a farewell was given to Mr. and Mrs. C. Geisler and family. In making the presentation of a cheque Mr. L. S. Fauchelle stated how sorry everybody was that Mr. and Mrs. Geisler had to leave their home in Otangiwai, as they had been among the earliest settlers of this valley to take up land here. Mr. •R. Dunn and Mr. D. Beaton also made speeches regretting the loss of such an old-established settler of Otangiwai, and wished them happiness in their new home. Mr. Geisler in replying thanked all for their kindness to him and his family and said how sorry they all were to be leaving their many friends. The results of the euchre party were: Ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs. Rutherford with 13 games, and the men’s first prize was won by Mr. A. McDougall with 14£ games. The ladies’ booby prize was won by Miss M. Rutherford and the men’s booby prize vzas won by Mr. A. Raitt. After supper and the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Geisler, dancing was held until, after 1 a.m., when the evening ended with Auld Lang Syne.
