LANTERN LECTURE AT URENUI
LONDONER’S TRAVELS IN AFRICA.
A lantern lecture was delivered in the Urenui hall on Tuesday by Mr. J. W. Weeden, London. During business trips to 'Africa in 1923 and 1926 Mr. Weeden combined business with pleasure, and with the aid of a small camera took a series of interesting snapshots of various ports of call in Africa. Mr. Weeden has had these viejvs enlarged, and with a good knowledge of the country and the habits of its people was able, to keep a large audience very interested. Mr. Weeden narrated his travels from Southampton around the coast and inland centres of Africa and back to England via the Suez Canal. The views depicted scenes at Madiera, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Delagoa Bay, Beira, Mozambique, Zanzibar, Mombasa, Port Soudan, Suez Canal and Genoa. Mr. Weeden showed several interesting slides of farm and scenic views in Cornwall, Devonshire and Yorkshire. Several of the farm scenes shown, especially harvesting operations, showed that Taranaki is much more advanced in its methods of saving supplementary fodder. « At the conclusion of the address Mr. J. F. Phillips, president of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, thanked Mr. Weeden for his instructive and interesting address, also Mr. J. M. Smith of the Agricultural Department for assisting Mr. R. Weeden with the lantern slides. Supper was served by members of the Women’s Division, „
