SUCCESSFUL CO-OPERATION

SERGEANT J. HENRY THANKED. MOTOR FLYING SQUAD AND POLICE The satisfactory results attending the co-operation of the police and the South Taranaki Automobile Association in cases of car conversion was mentioned at the association’s committee meeting on Wednesday. A special resolution of appreciation of the work of Sergeant Henry was carried. Misses J. C. and M. C. Buchanan wrote expressing appreciation of the association’s activities when their car was removed from Hawera and of the prompt recovery of the vehicle. They thanked members of the flying squad for the use of their cars and the long hours they had put in.

Broadcasting station 2YA wrote thanking the association for the prompt notification of the valuable part played by the station’s call in locating Miss Buchanan’s car.

The service officer, Mr. J. McKee, reported that he had given service to 18 motorists on the roads. He patrolled the roads on three wet days and gave service to two cars and on nine nights when he gave assistance to three members. He received only one night call. He erected, “school” signs at Whenuakura and revived nine of the old signs. Oh the Main South Road at Billecrap’s Hill a splendid job had been made by the county engineer. The outside edge had been built about three feet above the road level, thereby making the road safe. Push bicycles without lights were still far too prevalent on the roads. Coming from Wanganui last Saturday night he counted nine, and three cars with only one light, while one motor-cycle had no lights. All the main roads were in good travelling condition. Many sealed roads had been resurfaced, and in some cases widened, and made motoring more pleasant. The Waingongoro bridge on Skeet Road was being replaced by a new bridge; consequently there would be no through traffic during the erection of the new bridge. He suggested the erection of two signs warning motorists of this fact.

The Wanganui Automobile Association advised that signs were being erected at Waverley. No members of the association had been fined for speeding and the attitude of Constable Roche was upheld. The Wanganui Association also stated that the question of insufficient superelevation on the corner at the north end of Waitotara was being investigated. The Manaia Hibernian sports club forwarded a letter of appreciation of the work of the service officer at the ten-a-side tournament.
