ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Nathan Solomon: Letter withheld in view of similar cases still to be heard. — Ed. NEW ZEALAND LEGION. (To the Editor.) Sir,—l notice that a Mr. Faris, who was a delegate to the New Zealand Legion conference at Wellington, is reported to have stated that the people of this country are enjoying “social services” to which they are not entitled, and which they have never earned. I take it from his remarks, if the report is correct, that it is one of the aims and objects of the Legion to make drastic changes in something, but why be so vague? Why not let the public know in what direction these “social services” are demoralising the people? To'what is Mr. Faris alluding, and what are “social services” according to Mr. Faris’ definition? From a statement made by Dr. Campbell Begg he is anxious to get all the people to become members of the Legion, and if that is so, why these veiled threats of drastic action? In conclusion, I would like to ask Mr. Faris if any of the following “social services” incur the dis-., pleasure of the Legion, and which, if any, he would be prepared to assist in abolishing: Widows’ pensions, old-age pensions, pensions to" the blind, disabled soldiers’ pensions, miners’ pensions, Plunket Society subsidy, grants, to orphanages and hospitals, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and such like, or does he also include the twelve million pound “social service” to the farming industry that comes out ,of the pocket of all the people to whom Dr. Campbell Begg issues his invitation to join the Legion? Might" I ask Mr. Faris to give us something more definite than his Press reported statement.—l am, etc., ELLIS HYDE. Hawera, May 24.
