AGAIN DECIDED BY LOT

OHURA COUNTY CHAIRMANSFHP. CR. G. DENISON RE-ELECTED. For the second year in succession the chairmanship of the Ohura County Council had to be decided by lot, there being a tie in the original vote, and for the second year in succession the name of Cr. G. Denison was drawn from the hat while that of Cr. J. Caird remained. The clerk, Mr. J. F. McClenaghan, therefore declared Cr. Denison chairman.

The clerk .took the chair and called for nominations for the chairmanship. ' After a minutes’ sHence two nomination papers were handed in, the retiring chairman being nominated by Crs. F. Romayne and A. F. McKenzie, while Cr. J. Caird was nominated by Crs. A. A. Renner and L. G. FaucheUe. In accordance with custom the two candidates retired from the room and as that left only the proposer and seconder of each in the councH chamber a tie was a foregone conclusion. The names of Cr. Denison was drawn from a hat by the highways inspector, Mr. Delves.

On returning the candidates shook hands, Cr. ,Denison remarking, “I’m. sorry for you— Cr. Caird: “No, I’m sorry for you.” The chairman promised to do his best and trusted now that they knew each other better they would get on better than they did last year, when there was some bickering. Councillors were there primarily to dp their best for the ratepayers and then for the district general- ' ly. Cr. Caird in thanking his proposer and seconder said that he was sorry they had not reached the goal they had aimed I at. He made it clear that while he might differ, from the chairman with regard to the policy of the council he was out to support the chairman in upholding the dignity of the position. The council had some heavy work in front of it that would require careful handling. In congratulating the chairman Cr. Romayne said that possibly his presence in the chair might lead to a certain amount of bickering, but councillors should always bear in mind that as representatives of the ratepayers they must do their duty to the ratepayers in a spirit of co-operation. He thought that while some of their actions might be open to criticism it would be found that at heart they were sincere in purpose. The council was faced with great difficulty with regard to finance and would, have very little money to expend even on maintenance. While congratulating the chairman on his election he did not envy him his job. Councillors were later entertained by the chairman. GENERAL ITEMS.
