COUNCILLORS SWORN IN

CONGRATULATIONS FROM MAYOR. SELECTION OF; COMMITTEES. The newly-elected members of the Stratford Borough Council, Crs. R. F. Harkness, R. E. Carry er, R. R. Curtis, Dr. W. P. Gordon, A. H. Nelson, J. Crowe, A. H. Trotter, C. H. Speck and C. R. Finnerty, were sworn in as councillors at a special meeting of the council last night, after the Mayor-elect, Mr. J. W. McMillan, had formally taken his oath of office and assumed the chair. An apology was received from Mr. P. Thomson, ex-Mayor, who was away from Stratford.

“I think the election has been marked by a number of rather unusual features, not the least of which was the spin of a florin to decide the Mayoralty,” said Cr. McMillan after the swearing-in ceremony. He was sure that the late Mayor, Mr. Thomson, would feel he had not been defeated. His scrutineer had only called heads instead of tails. Mr. McMillan heartily congratulated the old councillors who had again received an expression of confidence from the electors, and the new councillors who had just been elected. The Mayor expressed sympathy with those old councillors who had' been defeated at the polls. These men had polled well, and he trusted they would not be deterred from again offering their services. Many of the present council would, miss Cr. A. J. Davey from the table. He thanked Mr. Davey for his services to the borough.

The Mayor hoped the council would enjoy a useful term of office and that any differences of opinion would, be left behind at the council table.

Cr. Gordon, who headed the poll, was elected deputy-Mayor according to custom. In accepting the office he thanked the Mayor for his remarks, and extended congratulations upon his success at the toss. He assured Mr. McMillan that the council would render him all the help and co-operation within its power. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES.,

Committees of the council were elected as follows:—

Works: Crs. Finnerty (chairman), Trotter, Crowe, Nelson and Speck. Electrical: Crs. Harkness (chairman), Gordon, Curtis and Carryer. Finance: Crs. Finnerty, Harkness, Trotter, Gordon and the Mayor.

Fire Brigade and Town Hall: Crs. Crowe and Curtis.

Cemetery: Crs. Trotter and Crowe. Abattoirs committee: Crs. Nelson and Curtis.

Band: Crs. Trotter and Carryer. Library: Cr. Gordon. Representative on the Stratford Unemployment Committee: The Mayor and Cr. Nelson.

It was agreed to nominate Mr. J. Cormack as the council’s representative on the Stratford Hospital Board. This nomination will have to be approved by the Government.

The council accepted with thanks the invitation of the Rev. T. Skuse to attend Divine service in the Methodist Church, and selected the evening of May 21 as the date of the service.
