RAWHITIROA HALL

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING. CHANGE IN CONSTITUTION. The annual meeting of the Rawhitiroa Hall Society, which had been adjourned from the previous week, was continued on Monday evening. Mr. W. P. Jenkins presided over an attendance of 18. The annual report stated that a very successful year had been experienced. Frequent functions had been held, all of which had received excellent support from the residents. A fortnightly euchre tournament had been held throughout the winter, and competition for the points prizes had been very keen. The ultimate winners were Miss M. Gernhoefer and Mr. G. Martin. The most important work undertaken by the committeee was the remodelling of the hall. Two dressing rooms were added to the front of the building, the supper-room was enlarged and improved, the stage was demolished, and the entrance steps were replaced by a wooden grating. The whole of this work had been accomplished by volunteer labour, and the committee expressed its thanks to the numerous helpers, especially to Mr. J. H. Bleakley, who supervised the work, Messrs. Knuckey, Prankerd and Gernhoefer, who gave free use of their lorries for transport, and Mr. W. P. Jenkins, who donated the silver-pine piles for the foundations. A most pleasing feature had been the practical interest evinced in the project by the whole district; every family had helped in some way to make it a success. A turning-place and parking-ground for cars had been formed by having portion of the bank opposite the hall cut away. Besides the euchre parties and dances arranged by the hall committee, the building had been used for many other functions arranged by local organisations. The cribbage club, the golf club, the cricket club, the bachelors and spinsters and the school committee had all held functions during the year, and there was no doubt that the policy of letting the hall cheaply to these committees had helped to extend the social life of the district.

The balance-sheet showed that the year ended with a credit balance, which was more than satisfactory, for, apart from the ordinary working expenses, a sum of over £63 had been expended on. rebuilding and improvements.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted after a short discussion. It was decided to change the constitutkXi whereby the control of the hall was in the hands of the school committee, as it was felt that the increase in the number and variety of the functions to be arranged necessitated an independent committee. The following committee was elected: Mr. G. V. Thame (chairman), Mrs. J. Cocker (secretary), Messrs. C. Ford, A. Baker, J. Gernhoefer, R. Campbell and F. Tiplet.

In view of the prevailing conditions, it was decided to reduce the price of admission to the euchre tournaments, and to offer two prizes each for ladies and men each evening.

The newly-elected committee Is to obtain estimates from skilled carpenters for lining the upper walls and the ceiling of the halk This season’s series of euchre tournaments will commence this week, and will continue throughout the winter. RAWHITIROA NOTES. Miss Elsie Belcher has left for a fortnight’s holiday in the north. Mr. F. Cave has returned from Palmerston North. Mr. A. M. Wilson has gone to Wellington for the school vacation. Miss P. Wood, who has taken up a nursing appointment at Dannevirke, was farewelled by a large circle of friends on Friday evening. As a token of esteem a wrist-watch was presented to Miss Wood, and she was accorded many wishes for success in her career.
