ATHLETICS AND CYCLING

GOOD FINANCIAL POSITION. YEAR’S TROPHY WINNERS. A credit balance of £66 and assets valued at £9O are revealed in the annual report of the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League. It is stated that the past season has been a successful one, over 40 active members displaying keen interest. The club was opened to runners, and Pukekura sportsground was obtained once a week for meetings but the response of competitors was disappointing and showed a financial loss to the club. For the fourth year in succession the mountain race was run by the club and was in every way a success, and showed a profit. The committee again wishes to thank Mr. Ben Tippins for his continued interest in the club. Cash prizes won during the season totalled £lBl besides numerous trophies, cyclists winning £139 and runners £42. Members gained first and second places in the mountain race, and C. Parker won three New Zealand track championships. The committee wished to thank the Press and all those who assisted the club during the past season, especially Mr. Beale who controlled the euchre parties so successfully. Receipts for the year total £269 4s, euchre parties and dances realising £29, road race gates £2O, entry fees £29, cash collections £2O 16s, donations £66 and membership fees £5 14s. On the expenditure side the main items are: Road race prizes £9l 14s, trophies £l7, racecourse hire £5, insurances £3 15s 9d, secretary’s bonus £lO 10s, advertising £l2 6s, programmes £l3 15s, posters £3 ss, Pukekura Park hire £2 2s. The season’s activities included: Three road series of 15 races, an unpaced road race championship, the road championship round Inglewood, Pungarehu open road race, the mountain open road race, ten. summer evening cycle and running sports, three club runs, six euchre parties, two country dances, the club dance and social, the road race dance and ten committee meetings.

In open competitions tire, club members won £lBl iii cash, three New Zealand . track championship ribbons, one New Zealand junior road championship ribbon, arid one Taranaki road championship ribbon, two bicycle, four cups, the Grey Shield and other, trophies valued at £3 10s. The leading cyclists were: C. Parker (£44 cash, three . New Zealand track championships and set of tyres), H. Snowden . (£3O cash, three cups, one bicycle, one medal), T. Hookham (£l2 5s cash), R. Yardley (£ll 8s cash, two medals, one ribbon), D. Ayson (£lO 7s 6d, one bicycle, one cup, one ribbon). The most successful runners were: C. Fox (£25 10s), F. Frethy (£10) and W. Aubrey (£6 105)., - Club trophies were won as follow:— Senior road championship, C. Gilbert 3 (cup and ribbon); unpaced road championship, T.
