APPEAL MADE TO GANDHI
GENERAL SMUTS INTERVIEWS. “MIGHT LEAD TO TRAGEDY* By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright Capetown, May 2. General Smuts has cabled Mahatma Gandhi durging him to delay his fasting, saying: “Endangering your life might lead to a dreadful calamity.’’ It is understood. that the Government of India will shortly consider its responsibility under the gaol rules requiring forcible feeding to prevent death by starvation.
Gandhi has given the world a week’s notice of his next fast. He informed the Press that he had decided unconditionally and irrevocably to fast for 21 days, commencing on May 8. He says that the fast is a heart prayer to God for the puriUcation of himself and his associates in their great work of improving the lot of India’s “untoi f hables” and outcasts. Gandhi was sentenced to six years’ simple imprisonment in March, 1922, but was released on February 4, 1924. In April, 1930, he inaugurated a campaign for breaches of the salt laws and was interned on May 5. He was again released on January 26, 1931, and subsequently went to London to attend the India Round-Table Conference. On his return to India the Nationalist leader resumed his activities, and on January 4, 1932, he and his associate, Vallabhbhai Patel, president of the Congress, were arrested at Bombay. Two months later Gandhi threatened to fast to death as a protest against the ’Government’s settlement of the communal
al question. After correspondence with the British Government Gandhi commenced a fast on September 20 and ended it on September 26. Doctors said he had then entered the danger zone. On November 6 the Nationalist leader again threatened to fast in connection with the admission of “Untouchables” into the temples. That fast, however, was postponed on December 29.
