CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

BARRIERS TO BRITISH TRADE. FAR-COUNTRY ROAD IMPROVEMENT The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Mr. A. F. Sandford presided over an attendance of about 25. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce wrote asking support for the foUowing resolution: “That the free and unrestricted entry of our exports to Great Britain is so vital to New Zealand that negotiations should be initiated to ascertain on what terms this right can be secured, and that we should be prepared to make concessions to achieve this end.” The chairman said the proposal seemed rather vague. Apparently the idea was if Great Britain would give unrestricted entry to New Zealand exports the Dominion would reciprocate by reducing tariffs against British goods. It seemed obvious that the raising of the exchange rate had placed a barrier against British exports that would be difficult to compete against Mr. Sandford thought the chamber could support the general principle of reducing barriers against British imports. Mr. W. P. Griffith moved that Dimedin should be asked to refer the matter to the next meeting of the Associated Chambers ,of Commerce, and this course was agreed to. The Aria Settlers’ Association wrote soliciting the co-operation of the chamber to secure the metalling of the Waita-. whena part of the Pio Pio-Tatu main highway. The letter added that it was needless. to stress the value the road would be. as an all-weather route between South Taranaki and the King Country. The letter was referred to the public works committee for a report. The Ohura County Council wrote asking the chamber to urge the need of metalling the Okahukura-Ohura main highway between Niho Niho and the junction with the Ohura Road at the 11-mile peg. If this gap were completed it would give an all-weather road from the Te Kuiti-Bulls main highway at its junction with the Ohura Road to the Paparata Saddle, leaving the Tangarakau Gorge the only gap waiting to make an all-weather road to Stratford. This letter, too, was referred to the public works committee.
