BRITISH TREATY WITH PERSIA

NOT DIRECTED AGAINST OTHERS. EXCLUSIVE PRIVILEGES DENIED. (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, May 1. The story published by the Daily Herald alleging the impending conclusion of an Anglo-Persian treaty for the purpose of making British influence dominant in Persia is described officially as wholly without foundation. A general treaty with Persia, it is stated, has been under negotiation since 1928, but there is no question of such a treaty securing any exclusive privilege for Great Britain or being in any way directed against any other country.

The Daily Herald foreshadowed an Anglo-Persian treaty, bringing Persia definitely Into the British sphere of influence and thus excluding Russian influence in Persia. The Shah of Persia was sending negotiators to London, the paper said. The treaty would include facilities for British air routes and preference for British subjects in economic concessions. Persia by a commercial treaty would give preferential treatment to British and Indian trade.
