MATIERE DISTRICT NEWS

WEEKLY EUCHRE PARTY. A large crowd attended the weekly euchre party held in the Otangiwai hall on Friday. Miss U. Carter and Mrs. J. Higgie tied for the ladies’ prize, Miss Carter winning the re-play. Mr. W. Lyon and Mr. H. Fauchelle tied for the men’s prize, Mr. Lyon winning the re-play. The ladies’ consolation prize went to Mrs. Ritchie, and Mr. S. Morgan won the men’s consolation after playing off with Mr. J. Dunn. Dancing and ping-pong followed the cards. Mr. G. P. Rutherford, of the Bank of New South Wales, New Plymouth, has

been spending part of his holiday with his parents at Otangiwai. Mrs. R. Meams, Tauranga, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. Agate, Matiere. Mrs. B. Norman, Whakatane, has returned home after spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. H. Gibson, Matiere. Messrs. A. L. and J. V. Ross paid a visit to Stratford during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Manning, Niho Niho, and Mr. C. A. Manning, Matiere, have returned home after spending the holidays visiting friends at Otorbhanga. Mr. C. E. Stewart, Matiere, is visiting New Plymouth, after which he will be staying with friends at Waverley. Mr. and Mrs. M. J. McAvady left on Wednesday morning to spend a holiday at Wanganui.

Mr. H. Stephenson, Island Bay, Wellington, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs.

M. Hannan, “Lesmoyle,” during the week-end. . ■.

A combined Anzac memorial service was held in the Matiere public hall on Tuesday evening, when a large congregation attended. Mr. W. , Sandison occupied the chair, and the Revs. J. L. Woodhouse and E. W. Marks conducted the service. The accompaniments for the hymns were played by Mrs. Stein (piano), Mr. T. V. Stein (violin) and Mr. G. Golding (cornet).
