WELBOURN SCHOOL’S YEAR

IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE. The annual meeting of Welboum school householders was held at Avenue Road, New Plymouth, on Monday night, Mr. E. MacFarlane presiding. The report stated that the revenue received from the Education Board as capitation allowance amounted to £3l 15s, and that £lO 2s 6d was spent in cleaning and sanitary services, £3 6s in light and firing, £3 15s 7d in improvements, and £2 18s in school books and stationery, while sundry expenses amounted to £3 17s 9d. Other money received was from grazing £9 5s 3d, of which £1 Is 6d was spent in a cricket set and 10s in material for reed loom work. The committee had leased the school paddock for grazing, and' that brought in £4 12s a year. Fences and gates had been erected, the floor of the shelter shed had been laid down in concrete and e coal and toolshed erected. The ground in front of the school to be laid down in tennis and basketball courts had been ploughed, and at present relief workers were levelling it. The gully had been cleared of fem by relief labour and trees had been planted. Further planting would be required this season. The fence on the Avenue Road frontage had been renewed by the board, effecting a great improvement. Reference was made to the success of the school sports meeting and to the fact that the school was represented at the primary school sports. One event was won by the school, and other pupils, though beaten, showed up well in the events in which they competed. The roll number in the dental clinic was 26, while so far this year only 20 had joined. That was regrettable, as the' clinic was doing very fine work. Thanks were extended to Mr. N. Moore for assistance. Mr. Moore had supervised all work put in hand by the committee and had taken a great interest in the welfare of the school. Thanks were also extended to Mrs. Roper, Miss Simpson, Mrs. Asquith, Mrs. Moore, and the A.S.R.S. for donations; also to Mrs. Roper and Mrs. C. Clarke for running competitions in connection with the school sports.

Miss Anthony, head teacher, reported that the roll number was 46—21 boys and 25 girls—and that there was every prospect of the numbers showing an. increase next term. During the third term of last year the roll number went down to 37, rising to 38 later in the term. This was an anxious time, but they had managed to keep an average attendance of 36.5, thus preventing the school from falling in grade. Credit was due to the children and the parents for this excellent attendance. The heating arrangements had not proved very satisfactory, but alterations had been made which it was hoped would be satisfactory in future. The following were appointed the committee: Messrs. E. MacFarlane, W. Gore, N. Asquith, A. Jordan and A. Warden. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr. MacFarlane was re-elected chairman and Mr. Asquith secretary, .
