HAWERA MAYORALTY

ADDRESS BY MR. W. G. SIMPSON. OUTLINE OF HIS POLICY GIVEN. Mr. W. G. Simpson, candidate for the Hawera mayoralty, addressed a large attendance, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey) in the Grand Theatre last night . - -Mr. Simpson stressed first, of. all tne duties and responsibilities of citizenship. He offered himself as a citizen for the mayoralty in the capacity of a citizen who wished to do his best for the town, he said. His personal policy programme included an immediate reduction of rates, this being necessitated by the reduced financial resources of the people. Wages, he thought, should be maintained at the present level. He believed, in a living wage for everyone performing a public d E’or the 809 unemployed in Hawera today he would do the utmost possible. He believed in straining resources to the utmost this year, believing firmly that next year there would be not such great need among the unemployed. He advocated setting up a committee of citizens to hear complaints of hardship where tenants had been • evicted and • advocated a free use of the public library for the unemployed. ’ , . He was not, he continued, in favour or duplicating the water mains to provide work unless the water was really, needed. Nolantown should, in his opinion, receive more attention, particularly to the roads, and a children’s playground should be provided. A better system of rubbish collection in the town was needed. He would assist the Maoris by establishing a rest house in the town and would attempt to foster a good relationship between country and town. He would widen High Street in whole or -in part at least and believed that some timp. a town hall and municipal block of shops and offices should be erected. ' ‘Mr. Simpson briefly dealt with the Question of hospital expenditure, pointing out that £llOO had been spent on the hospital and £lO5O on King Edward Park by the borough council last jyear.
