TREATY WITH PERSIANS
NEW SPHERE OF INFLUENCE SECURITY OF CONCESSIONS NEW OIL ROYALTY BASIS PREFERENCE FOR BRITISH By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. London, May 1. The Daily Herald foreshadows an Anglo-Persian treaty, bringing Persia definitely into the British sphere of influence and thus excluding Russian influence in Persia. The Shah of Persia is sending negotiators to London, the paper says. The treaty will include facilities for ’British air routes and preference for British subjects in economic concessions. Persia by a commercial treaty will give prefer-ential-treatment to British and Indian trade.
The Teheran correspondent of the Times states that the Persian newspapers declare the agreement cancels the former 16 per cent basis of royalty in favour of 4s. a ton on oil extracted, with the payment of £2,000,000 in gold against outstanding claims and last year’s royalty. The Anglo-Persian Company’s concession has been extended for 30 years.
