The nameplate is fixed on the quarter-deck above the rear .gun. : Addressing the crew, the vice-admiral , said: “We promise to do our duty toward the people and the Fatherland, in the same spirit as the old Emden did it.” He described how the nameplate ’had been ceremoniously handed to the president, Marshal von Hindenburg, by Mr. S. M. Bruce, Australian Minister in London, and recalled Mr. Bruce’s words: “The enmity of both nations is definitely buried.” When the old Emden’s flag, which veiled the nameplate, was removed, guns fired a salute, and the crew cheered the President and sang “Deutschland Über Allee.” - .
