WHITE STAR LINERS
DEPARTURE FOR JAPAN. / SOLD FOR BREAKING UP. ■ —.l « The two White Star liners, Megantic and Baltic, which were recently purchased by Japan for breaking-up purposes, sailed from Liverpool for the Far East recently. It is understood that one of them carried 4000 tons of coal. Both liners acted as troopships during the Great War. The Megantic, built at Belfast in 1909, was commissioned as a troopship by the Canadian Army and during 1915 off Queenstown was chased by three submarines. After the war she took home both the Harvard Medical unit and the last of tfoe Australian trops. Again in 1927 she carried marines to China when the situation was threatening there. She has speed of 16 J knots, a gross tonnage of 14,878 and accommodation for 600 first and 100 third-class passengers. The Baltic during the war brought over 32,000 American and Canadian troops to France. She is five years older than the Megantic and formerly was one of the White Star “Big Four”—the others being the Adriatic, Celtic and Cedric/'
