NEW WHARF TO BE BUILT. ■' - —- if* WORK FOR AUCKLAND FIRM. A large quantity of timber and other material to be used in the’ construction of a new wharf at Waitangi, Chatham Islands, will be loaded at Auckland on the intercolonial motor-ship Port Waikato, which is due from Newcastle tomorrow. The vessel will probably proceed to Waitangi from Wellington. The decision to build a wharf at Waitangi is the result of negotiations extending over several years. The conttact price for the wharf alone was £10,348 and the cost of the approach and shed is expected to bring the total expenditure to about £12,000. The Rope Construction Company, of Auckland, was the successful tenderer. ' ' • In January the company sent an ad- ' vance working party from Lyttelton to Waitangi by the steamer Tees, which also took an' overseer and a member of the Public Works Department’s engineering staff to survey and set out the approach road to the wharf. The provision of a wharf is expected to add to the prosperity of the islands, which have been severely handicapped through lack of adequate shipping facilities.
