WORK AT NORTH EGMONT

COMMITTEE’S STATUTORY MEETING USE OF THE KAHUI HUT. Good progress with the tar-sealing work on the road to North Egmont was announced at a meeting of the north committee of the Egmont National Park Board last night. There were present Messrs. J. S. Connett (chairman), J. W. Whitehead, G. W. Gibson, H. V. S. Griffiths, E. W. M. Lysons, F. Amoore, W. D. Armit, R. Stuart and W. H. Moyes. The meeting was the statutory one held in March each year, and Mr. J. S. Connett was re-elected chairman for the ensuing twelve months. Messrs. Connett and Moyes were elected representatives to the Egmont National Park Board.

The Inglewood County Council, which was doing the work on the road in the reserve, had completed 1| miles from the top, it was reported. With fine weather it was hoped to finish the work within a week, but aIL depended on the weather. It was decided to make application to the Inglewood Unemployment Committee for six men for work on the track cleaning water-tables, etc. That numerous parties from other houses and outside the reserve were making use of the Kahui hut without paying any fees was mentioned in a letter from the chairman of the west committee, Mr. G. Gibson. It was suggested by the west committee that it was only fair and honourable that the users should pay either the west secretary, Mr. C. W. Clements, Kahui Road, or else give the fees to the other committees if they left from the other houses.

The radio emergency corps wrote stating that they weje able to provide good work on the mountain in case of emergency. They were short of funds and had not full equipment. A donation from the committee would be appreciated. Consideration of the matter was deferred until further information regarding the corps’ needs is obtained. The manager (Mr. H. Nodder) reported that considerable work had been done tiling the roofs of all the older buildings and painting. It was hoped to paint the hostel later. The other buildings were now spick and span. The secretary reported having received £lOOO from the recent art (inion. The money had been ear-marked firstly for the present tar-sealing and secondly for the renovation of all the buildings at North Egmont. A sub-committee was appointed . to bring down a report on a more efficient control of traffic on the track.
