NO MARRIED CURATES
ENGLISH BISHOP’S PLAN.
"HELPFUL TO THE CHURCH.” “Young men entering the ministry have no time for the job of getting married, buying furniture and looking after a wife and home. They have their job to learn.” This statement was made recently by Dr. Wilson, Bishop of Chelmsford, England, in an explanation of his decision not to accept young candidates for ordination unless they gave him an undertaking not to marry without his consent during the first three years of their Church work. “I have thought about this matter for a considerable time,” Dr. Wilson said. “To-morrow morning the first letter I receive from a young man asking to be ordained will bring him under my new rule. * “This is no attempt to interfere with the right of an individual. It is just an effort to make a young curate really believe that his job is the first thing that matters. He has a lot to learn, a lot to do. How can he find time., for marriage? In business, many young men have to leam their job before they are allowed to get married. “There may be one or two cases that I shall have to treat as exceptions. For instance, a young man who has been ordained may be engaged to a girl, who is stranded in the world. That is just an example. I should certainly not allow the wealthy young man to get married because he has money and can afford it more easily. That is just the type my rule has been made for. “I believe I shall be the only bishop to enforce such a ban, but I am doing it because I think it will be really helpful to the Church, and. even to the young men themselves.” The bishop has never hesitated to criticise or attack what he thought was wrong. He aroused recently the ire of many people when, he said, “X sometimes think ‘fashion’ is another word for ‘cowardice.’ Why on earth should women do exactly what somebody in Paris says?”
