UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

NORTH TARANAKI COMMITTEE. IMPROVEMENTS ON GOLF LINKS. . The fortnightly meeting of the North Taranakt Unemployment Relief Committee was held at New Plymouth yesterday. There were present Messrs. J. Brown (chairman), H. V. S. Griffiths, R. W. D. Robertson, E. J. Carr and C. P. Smith (secretary). In reply to an inquiry from the committee regarding relief work at the Fitzroy golf links the town clerk wrote notifying the committee of a resolution passed by the council' at the last meeting. The works committee had investigated the position and had formed the opinion that no material benefit had accrued to i the land privately owned as a result of the employment of relief labour thereon. The land had been improved only in respect to the playing facilities for golf, and that as a result of the work the grazing value of the land had decreased. 1 It could not be doubted that the grazing value had decreased, said the chairman. The lupins that had protected the growth of a certain amount of grass had been cut and the • grass was drying up as a result, pointed out Mr. Robertson. . It appeared that a misunderstanding had occurred, said Mr. Brown. After the committee had completed the work on the reserve it should have made fresh application through the right channel for the work on Mr. Colson’s property. Mr. - Smith considered that although the point, was raised, that no contribution was made by the owner the golf course was under the jurisdiction of a public society and was an asset to the town. Mr. Robertson thought that as far as the owner was concerned he seemed to have contributed something in that he had granted the use of the land practically free of charge. The grazing value had decreased as a result of the work done. . It appeared a misunderstanding had occurred. Various miscellaneous cases and applications were dealt with.
