RABBITS IN EGMONT COUNTY
FARMERS’ WATCHING POSITION. DISCUSSION BY THE UNION. The Opunake branch of the Farmers’ Union met on Saturday afternoon. Mr. j; Conaglen, jun. (chairman) presided over a fair attendance. The secretary reported that in reply to notices he had sent out for information regarding rabbits one farmer near Taungatara replied that 37 rabbits had been destroyed, and since that notification he had shot others and destroyed several burrows. He practically kept a daily watch for rabbits. Another farmer at Oaonui reported he had shot a rabbit and destroyed several burrows. Verbal reports indicated that rabbits had been seen, at Pihama and Oeo. Mr. Julian said it was a sufficient menace for farmers to keep a keen look-out. Mr. Bevan, who has had a deal of experience in rabbit districts, was of opinion that the sporting population would keep the rabbits in check in this district. The rabbits that had been shot were in excellent condition. Mr. R. Julian brought a specimen to the meeting. The chairman was of opinion it would be better to take action, now and not leave it until the nuisance became more serious.
Messrs. Allen and R. Julian were appointed delegates to wait on the county council and ask that a bounty be offered for rabbits. Mr. Julian brought up the matter of promoting a drive of stock in aid of relieving the distress during the winter. On the motion of Mr. Sheat and Mr. Eustace it was decided to bring this matter before the executive so as to make it a substantial one.
