Prospecting for gold under the unemployed relief fund in the regions of the Whitcombe Pass and Wilberforce will begin this week, says a Christchurch newspaper. The Ashburton County Council has received advice from the Unemployment Board approving of the scheme and two parties, each consisting of eight men, under the guidance of a qualified mining engineer and a guide, will leave for the back country at the end of this week.

The first of the new season’s Saturday night dances organised by the social committee of the Westown Hall Society was held on Saturday, when between 70 and 80 couples were present. The floor was in excellent order and Fre.d. Williams’ dance band provided the music. Though there were a few modem dances the greater part of the programme was devoted to those of the old type, which proved very popular. In connection with the judgment taken in the court at New Plymouth on Thursday by the Commissioner of Taxes against F. H. Masters, the defendant has explained that the matter had been the subject of negotiations between himself and the Income Tax Department, who had agreed to an adjournment of the proceedings for further negotiation. A telegram to this effect was received on Wednesday by Mrs. Masters from the commissioner during the absence of her husband in Wellington, |nd concluding the matter was so arranged she took no step in connection therewith, and it was only on his return from Wellington on Friday night that» Mr. Masters learned with surprise that judgment had been taken against him. As the court had received no advice regarding the commissioner’s consent to an adjournment pending further negotiations, the magistrate had no option.
