ELTHAM BOWLERS WIN

GOOD CONTEST AT HAWERA TARANAKI COMPETITIVE FINAL. DEFEAT OF AUROA CLUB TEAMS. Two teams from each of Eltham and Auroa bowling clubs played the final of the Taranaki shield competition at the Park (Hawera) green on Saturday. Eltham won by 47 points to 39. Each club won one game but Harrison s team won the aggregate for Eltham, The green was very fast and troubled all the players to some extent, but the bowling was of a good standard. A three on the first gave Casey’s team confidence and they held the upper hand till the end of the 9th, when the score was 9—5 in favour of the Eltham four. In the‘next seven heads, however, Auroa scored 12 points to their opponents’ 1, so that the score was 17—10 in favour of Kilpatrick at the end of the seventeenth, and 19 —11 after three more. Casey took three on the 21st and. one on the 22nd and was only four behind—--15—19. On the 23rd Auroa toox one, and four on the next, leading 2'4—15. The last head saw Casey lying one .when the skips changed over, but Kilpatrick, electing to drive, knocked kitty into the next rink. Sheerin did the same with a running shot next head. Again Eltham lay one and again Kilpatrick drove but both bowls missed narrowly, leaving the result 24—16 in Auroa’s favour. Harrison’s team began to show, what they could do from the first bowl and in three heads led On the next two heads the Auroa men got in a three and one with Johnstone, the skip, drawing particularly well, and for the first and last time they led, s— t. It was 6-all after six heads, but from then on the scores' widened rapidly, a three on the 11th and again on the 15th and a four on the 17th giving Harrison and his men double their opponents’ score, 20— 10, when they began the 18th head. Harrison drew the shot to increase the lead by one. He did the same at the 19th, and at the 20th had five round kitty, which Johnstone jukt failed to rest out with his last bowl—27 —10. Johnstone drew two on the next while Harrison’s fast one went wide —27—12. Again Johnstone drew the shot inside Rowe’s excellent bowl, Harrison being just short--27—13. A. lucky follow-through cannon shot gave Harrison two on the 23rd with his last bowl. . The other team had finished their game leaving Eltham eight ahead on the aggregate. Auroa took two on the 24th, Johnstone drawing one. Harrison drove but failed to alter the position. Eltham were six up on the day with one head to go. Franks drew the shot with a beautiful bowl, Stewart put one in and Johnstone was obliged to put kitty in the ditch, but Harrison drew two good ones while Johnstone put his second in the ditch also, giving Eltham two on the head and the game 31—15. Quin, president of the Taranaki centre, congratulated the Eltham team on their meritorious win, referring to the good performance by Auroa, who had only about a dozen men in their club. He presented the shield to Eltham, saying it. gave him pleasure to see a new club winning the Taranaki competition. Mr. Johnson, on behalf of the Auroa players said they did not’ mind being beaten in the final by a better team. They had been delighted to get so far. He thanked the Park Club for the use of their excellent green. Mr. Casey, president of the Eltham Club, thanked the speakers for their congratulations and the Auroa members for the good game they had enjoyed. Cheers were given for the winners and losers and the ladies. LYALL BAY’S SUCCESS. CENTRE’S SENIOR PENNANT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Lyall Bay Bowling Club yesterday won the senior pennant of the Wellington Centre, securing 100 per cent, of wins in the last round. This is the third time the; club has scored 100 per cent. Eastbourne also recorded 100 per cent, wins and Woburn, the runners-up, 100 per cent, losses. Lyall Bay have won this season the Dominion champioji rinks, senior pennant, centre champion pairs, champion rinks, centre tournament and Stansell Shield—probably a Dominion record performance for one season.
