SURF COMPETITION AT PATEA

CASTLECLIFF WINS LAMB CUP. A. RYAN CHAMPION BELTMAN. The Patea beach was crowded with spectators who arrived from all parts of the district to see the annual competition for the Margaret Lamb Cup. The cup is the winners of a fourman rescue and resuscitation event. Teams from Wanganui, Hawera and Patea competed yesterday. The weather was ideal, and a heavy surf with an caster-. ly set made the water work interesting. The judging was undertaken by Messrs. T. Anderson and C. Swan, Mr. K. Congreve being marshal and timekeeper. The resuscitation ■work was undertaken separately following the surfing. Points were awarded as follows:— Castlecliff 120 J, Patea A 118, Patea B 103 J. A re-race to decide the beltman championship had to be staged owing to the shifting buoy and the changing water conditions. The winner was A. Ryan (Hawera) in 3m 3 3-ss. The teams were:— Castlecliff: D. Langslow (capt.), W. Broadhead (linesman), C. Naylor (beltman), H. McGluskey (patient). . Hawera A: M. Cook, O. Brown, I. Jobson, K. McGlashan. Hawera B: N. Nelson, G. McGlashan, A. Ryan, S. Anderson. Patea A: R. Adams, J. Harkness, A. McDowall, H. Carlyle. Patea B: A. B. Currie, P. Bourke, A. Currie, A. Maxwell. Patea C: E. Green, M. Fitzwater, J. Richardson, H. Williams.
