TARANAKI LEAGUE FOOTBALL
THIRD CLUB IN NORTH FORMED. TO BE NAMED EASTERN SUBURBS. A Western Suburbs League Football Club was formed at New Plymouth last night at a well attended meeting of supporters of the code. There were 35 present, Mr. V. Simpson being appointed to the chair. » Mr. Simpson expressed pleasure at seeing such a number present. It was an encouragement to the club and to the executive appointed for the formation of clubs, he said. He stressed the need for friendly relations with sister codes as there was room for more than one code in Taranaki. The number present showed that the efforts of the executive, which had been working strenuously, were appreciated. The utmost assistance was promised from the New Zealand League Centre, and communications were expected from the council this week. Mr. Simpson referred to the use of Western Park, for which negotiations had been concluded.
In reply to a question Mr. Simpson said the executive was not in a position to attempt to obtain the use of Pukekura Park yet. The League code in Taranaki had to crawl before it could walk and it was hoped that in the years to come League would be able to bid for Pukekura Park. If necessary Pukekura Park would be obtained for the two Saturdays the rights of which the sportsground committee had reserved, but the League executive wanted to play fairly, by the Western Park Board. Just because they might have a big fixture to play, it might not be the thing to run away from .Western Park to Pukekura Park because Pukekura Park was the more central ground. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. A. F. Aldie; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. G. Blanchard, S. Flood, A. Stevenson, W. Parker, R. Cox with power to add; honorary secretary, Mr. K. Bedford; honorary treasurer, Mr. G. Blanchard; committee, Messrs. H. Lewis, C. Wannacott, B. Frewin, G. Hooker and J.. Harnett; delegates to Taranaki League Centre,. Messrs. H. Lewis and G. Blanchard. Black and gold were decided upon as the club colours. The subscriptions were fixed at 5s for seniors and 2s 6d for juniors. Suggestions were made for matches at Easter, Mr. Simpson announcing that the centre would see that there was some attraction for players and public. There were many players in Stratford and Eltham willing to join a Thursday competition, Mr. Simpson said. He would be visiting those towns again soon, and he thought a competition could be arranged. Mr. J. R. Sceats stated that there was a big possibility of a Thursday junior competition being arranged between Inglewood, Midhirst, Tariki and Stratford, in all of which places teams would probably be raised. Asked what help was likely to be received from the New Zealand League Centre Mr. Simpson said the Taranaki executive had been led to believe that assistance would be forthcoming from the New Zealand centre, but the centre had not met for some time. Mr. Sceats said that he had interviewed centre officials at Auckland and had been assured that when it was seen that progress was being made in Taranaki assistance would be forthcoming. Taranaki would be entitled to a delegate . to the New Zealand centre when there were four clubs in Taranaki, Mr. Simpson stated in reply to a question. It was made a recommendation to the executive to obtain copies of rule books to enable players to be conversant with the rules before they started the game. The matter of insurance of players was being taken up by the executive with the Auckland centre, Mr. Simpson said, and players woud be advised, as soon as possible what arrangements had been made.
Twenty-four playing members announced their intention of joining the club.
