BEEKEEPING IN SCHOOLS
FIELD DAY TO-MORROW, Beekeeping as a phase of the agricultural activities in Taranaki primary school education was introduced into three coastal schools, Puniho, Okato and Warea, this year, Mr. H. D. Maxwell, a well-known apiarist, acting in cooperation with the agricultural districts and teachers. During December last an interesting field day Was held when the work in preparation for the honey crop was demonstrated. To-morrow, weather permitting, it is proposed to hold another field day when a demonstration will be given of handling the honey crop. The following programme has been arranged: 11.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m.: At Upper Timaru Road on Mr. Riley’s farm. Talk on bees by Mr. Maxwell, and exhibit of honey from the school apiaries, with an explanation of the Work being carried out at these schools.
12.15 p.m. to 1 p.m.: Lunch; tea, milk and sugar will be provided, Visitors and others to provide their own cups and lunches.
1 to 1.30 p.m.: Demonstration and explanation of queen-rearing. 1.30 to 2.15 p.m.: The children and parents from the Warea school district, in company with Mr. Maxwell will proceed to his factory to witness the extracting of the honey from that school’s hive. 2.15 to 3 p.m.: At Mr. Morris’ farm, Upper Timaru Road, taking honey from hives.
3 to 3.45 p.m.: Warea and Okato children disperse and Puniho school children and parents proceed to the factory for honey extraction. After this Mr. Maxwell Will be pleased to discuss bee-keep-ing in its various phases With any persons specially interested. Swimming will be available for those desiring to do so during the day.
