NEWMARKET HANDICAP
FLEMINGTON’S BIG SPRINT.
DOWN THE STRAIGHT SIX TO-DAY.
(By
“Hurry. On.”).
Australia’s richest- sprint event, the Newmarket Handicap, will take-place at the Flemington racecourse to-day. This event, which constitutes the first “leg” of the big Victorian autumn double, is run on the famous straight six-furlong track and is the great test of a sprinter; Peculiar to relate, it is a big advantage to be drawn on the outside on what is known as the Malua track, and the winner nearly always finishes right under the judge’s box. Closing Time was the early favourite, but after his failure in the Oakleigh Plate and Wi.nooka’s brilliant win in the. Futurity Stakes it is probable that the 1 latter will be the best supported to-day. Another runner with a, big, following is St. Ardent, who was very unlucky in the Oakleigh Plate and is expected to do better here. Others likely to go well are Chatham, Waltzing Lily and Vauntry. The acceptors are:—< ‘ NEWMARKET HANDICAP, of £2000; six furlongs: Greenline 10.2, Chatham 10.2, Winooka 9.9, Parkwood 9.4, Closing, Time 8.10, Waltzing Lily 8.9, Valmist 8.6, Vauntry 8.6, Keen Edge 8.5, St. Ardent 8.5, Green Wave 8.3, Jacko 7.13, Valiant Maid 7.12, Dominant 7.12, Multudo 7.10, Ibrani 7.10, Call Bird 7.9, Segati 7.8, Iskander 7.1, Eminenere 7.1, Azwarby 6.7, Maybe 6.7.
